Please read more on how your purchase supports urban farming and people at risk: VeggieRx is a cooperative program developed with the Chicago Botanic Garden and Lawndale Christian Health Center. VeggieRx packs, grown and packed by Windy City Harvest trainees, are prescribed by healthcare providers to eligible people with diet-related diseases, such as diabetes and heart disease. Modeled as a nutritious pharmacy, VeggieRx provides free produce packs, complete with recipes for healthfully preparing kale, arugula, collard greens, and other organically grown vegetables. Along with the packs, patients receive weekly nutrition education and cooking lessons from University of Illinois-Chicago’s Chicago Partnership for Health Promotion. The program addresses four key components of healthy food access: physical access (it is readily available in the community), economic access (it is affordable), cultural access (it is the type of food you might like to eat prepared in a way that is culturally relevant), health access (you understand WHY it’s important to eat it. Seven hundred patients are expected to participate in VeggieRx this year.
